No, Reef - Reach uses the 4G and 3G terrestrial mobile telephone network.
The short answer is yes, as long as your device is capable, the network is not congested, you have a 4G connection and good signal strength. The same as would apply on land when using your mobile phone.
Yes, you can make normal calls and send texts via Reef-Reach provided that your mobile device supports Wi-Fi calling, it is enabled on your device and your mobile provider supports it. Consult with your provider if this option is not available to you.
At present Reef - Reach will support up to five devices connected at any one time.
No, Reef-Reach is provided as an unlocked device and is supplied with an installed sim card of your choice. Sim cards from other carriers can be installed by following the manufacturer’s instructions. From time-to-time Reef-Reach may be offered locked to a specific carrier if there is a specific advantage for the customer.
Yes, Reef - Reach will work on all Australian networks when the correct sim card is fitted. The device supports the following mobile bands - 4G: 1,3,7,28 and 3G: 850, 2100 Mhz.
At present this is unknown, Reef - Reach should work in countries with compatible mobile networks that operate on the following bands - 4G: 1,3,7,28 and 3G: 850, 2100 Mhz. The appropriate sim card will need to be fitted or data roaming enabled. Consult your respective carrier for this option.
No, at present Reef-Reach does not support 5G. Presently the 700mhz (b28) 4G network generally provides superior coverage at sea and in rural areas compared to current 5G networks.
Yes, you will need to pay your mobile service provider for continued access to their network, just as you do with your mobile phone. Some providers provide casual access to their network, you will need to do your own research on this and select what best suits your circumstance.
This is a difficult question to answer. Range will be mainly dependent on the height of the Reef - Reach device and the height, frequency band, power output and antenna orientation of the cell it is using. Any obstructions in the path between your Reef - Reach and the mobile cell will detract from the useable signal strength. This is why you can be in an anchorage and relatively close to a mobile cell and have trouble getting service. Reef-Reach is designed to be pulled up your mast on a halyard to get it as high as possible, this provides an advantage when mobile signals are weak. Real world examples of where Reef - Reach has successfully operated from and the difference made by using it compared to your mobile device in the cockpit can be viewed by pressing HERE.
Reef - Reach will provide sufficient signal strength for good download speeds up to around 25m (clean line of sight) from the mobile device. Connectivity will be achievable for up to twice this distance, download/upload speed will be degraded.
If you have the ability to get Reef - Reach up above the water by even just 3-4 meters, it will improve your mobile range to some degree. Obviously the higher the better, if you own a fly-bridge or similar it would be worthwhile.
Yes, Reef - Reach will work on a steel, aluminum or ferro boat. However, if your decks and cabin tops are made of this material you may experience some degradation of WIFI signal strength when down below. If you experience this, it can be offset by not raising your Reef - Reach device as high in the air as others with glass or timber vessel do. This may in turn reduce your range in some circumstances.
The battery is re-chargeable and easily swapped out for a charged one. Battery life depends on usage, real life use has found that it lasts for 10-12 hours with moderate use by two people.
Your Reef-Reach will be provided to you with a name of your choice of up to 32 characters, this name is advertised out on your Wi-Fi network. For example: Black Pearl - Reef-Reach
Reef - Reach is weatherproof if used in accordance with manufacturer's instructions, although it will float, it is not waterproof. If dropped into the water, it should be retrieved as soon as possible. No guarantee is provided for immersion in water.
